Ok well I’m thinking about adding a really small kitchen to the ‘camper van’ well its actually going to be in a Rav 4 for now, but this is just to get me interested in van life. I will possible progress to a bigger vehicle in the future, but for now, my dad has kindly says he will let me use the Rav4 to trial run my idea of living in a vehicle.
I am know I’m going to be almost full time in it, maybe 6 nights a week and I’m going to need to at least reheat food at the bare minimum, so I’m going to need a little gas burner, possibly 2. The Rav does have a fair amount for room in the back, ill need a full side (probably drivers side) to put in the bed platform and I’d like to have the are to the left of that free for a small kitchen.
I was considering having a pull out wooden table under the bed which would only actually work when you were able to cook outside, as you’d need the door open. It would be good to have the door open though as ill be using gas canisters and you will need to keep the vehicle very well ventilated in order to not poison yourself with carbon monoxide.

This little thing looks great because it has a slide out table on the side, but I feel that the sink is not really necessary in a small vehicle like what im going to use, so even though its tiny and very usable, I don’t think its a great use of space.

This is what it looks like when the table part is folded out, do you think you would be able too cook off of this? It would be really handy to be able to chop things up on that fold out table and then put the stove on it to cook. It works because you could prep the food and then cook it and clean the pans plus be able to wash them afterwards. The major benefit with this one is that you could cook inside the vehicle and also stood outside it. I’m really considering making it.
It looks kind of simple to make yourself as well and the only thing which might be an issue is the tap. I think I will have to find and electric tap for this or a manual one that you pump yourself. If you do this, you have the following.
- A chopping board
- A water supply
- A sink
- A versitile inside/outside cooking space
- A place to put your stove
You would have to be able to get rid of that grey water though after you’ve finished cooking, so you need to either have a dirty water tank inside this little box, or be able to store the dirty water in bottles and empty them another time. I think a 5 litre plastic water bottle should easily be able to last me a week before I got back to my parents place to empty it each week.
